If you take a HPT & it's negative & then leave it for 5 mins or so it the other line will appear & it will look positive.. with any HPT test it says not to look at a negative for more than 5 mins. The second line will appear although it will look very faint. Other than that if you take a test & it shows positive within a few minutes then you are pregnant.. My best advice for anyone is to go to the doctor & get a pee test done.. it's 100% accurate. I hate those HPT's!!

No. HPT's (Home Pregnancy Tests) measure the amount of HCG hormone in your urine.
If you have a high amount of HCG in your urine then you're pregnant.
The only time it could come up as positive when you're not pregnant would be if you'd had IVF treatment and been taking HCG injections for the first part of your cycle (to suppress your hormones). Sometimes the HCG can linger in your system for a while and show up in the HPT.
But thats rare. Usually its pretty impossible to get a false positive HPT.
NB: IF you get a faint positive but future tests show a negative it doesn't mean the first test was "wrong" - it means you had conceived but the embryo didn't stick and you lost it in a slightly late period - sort of like a very very early miscarriage.

hi in my experience false positives are extreamly rare, ive just been through this myself as i had 15positive urine tests and 1 negative blood test!
home pregnancy test measure the amount of HCG hormone in your body, but each test measure at different rates (ie 5m/lu being the least amount of HCG needed for the test to be positive - First response test is good for this as it gives an accurate result as early as the day before your period is due)
There are only two ways you can have a false positive result:
1: you are taking medication that contains HCG these are usually fertility drug.
or
2: in some very rarely cases cancer of the reproductive organs.
If you have done a positive test it is very likely that you are pregnant, so see your doctor, maybe if your still not sure about the result ask the doctor to do a beta qualitive blood test as this gives the exact reading of HCG in your blood system and will give a definate yes/no answer.

A positive pregnancy test is usually very accurate. However, sometimes people can have a silent miscarriage early on which is not noticed by the person and then a repeat test will be negative.
Hope this helps!

Absolutely those tests are very accurate a false positive is very very rare. My dr never even bothered following up with a blood test originally, I told him I'd had a positive result and he said congratulations!!!

most pregnancy tests are pretty good. if it's positive, it's positive. you have a better chance of having a false negative than a false positive.

The likelihood is very slim the main reason a test shows a pos. sign is pregnancy. But in the rare instance that it was not done properly it could show up pos. and if you are taking certain hormone therapy and unless you are going through menopause you would not be taking them.

No. I asked my Dr. about this, and he said it's not possible. HPTs measure hcg, which is only present in the body when you're pregnant.
When I first got pregnant, and it was positive, I called, and they were like "congrats." And I was like, don't you need to check and make sure? She said no, if it's a positive HPT, then you're pregnant.
