As in dance sexy, rather than looking like I'm marching on the spot...

I was at Pangaea, a VIP club in london the other day, and doing my usual, I love dancing so I just get up and lose myself in the music, but I am in no way delusional, I can't dance for ****, lol. One day it'd be nice to just get up and dance, have fun, and look GOOD at the same time, lol. Any tips?

Not fat, I'm 5ft7", weigh 7st, & am a makeup artist turned stylist, so I avoid wearing dufflecoats in clubs... usually. Hope that narrows it down a little. :)

I will tell you what my brother, the coolest guy I know, told me once. First of all, I am definitely a big dork at heart, so dancing sexy and cool was not a natural talent for me. OK, he said, " Don't move your arms around too much, as it makes you look like a spaz. Don't try any complicated dance moves or anything you saw on a music video because if you don't know how to do it right, you will look llike a spaz. Keep your feet a shoulder-width apart and sort of pop your hips to the beat, but if it's a really fast techno song or some other kind of song with 4 beats for every measure, just pop your hip on every other beat, because manically popping hips that fast makes you look like- you guessed it-a spaz." So then I said, " well, that's all well and good, but could you please tell me how to pop my hips without looking like the aforementioned spaz?" And he said, "Just shift your weight to the other foot, and as you do that raise your hip slightly-emphasis on SLIGHTLY- and then repeat with the other foot." That sounded good, but I also wanted to know what you're supposed to do with your arms if you're not allowed to move them above your head in a spastic manner. He said, "Keep them down by your sides and sway them slightly-SLIGHTLY- in time to the beat. If that gets too complicated, keep them down by your sides, in manner of girls in old Robert Palmer videos or similar." I tried to show him my signature dance move where I grab my ankle behind my bum and jerk it up and down while hopping on the other foot, and he just sighed sadly. I did follow his instructions at clubs, though, and while I didn't stand out as an exceptional, sexy dancer, I also didn't stand out in that bad way either, so I guess you can say it worked.

How To Dance Sexy

TRY NOT TO DO ANY "DATED" DANCES LIKE THE ROBOT OR THE TOOTSIE ROLL OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. ALSO, KEEP UP WITH THE BEAT. DON'T BE DIRTY DANCING TO A SLOW SONG OR SWAYING TO "DROP IT LIKE IT'S HOT" ... IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?!!!! JUST BE COOL AND WATCH PEOPLE AROUND YOU. LEARN SOME BASIC MOVES THAT WILL ALWAYS BE AROUND. THERE ARE VIDEOS OUT THERE THAT WILL TEACH YOU SOME BASIC DANCE TECHNICS. LEARN THOSE, LISTEN TO THE MUSIC AND LET THE MUSIC GUIDE YOU. YOU'LL BE OKAY.

To look hot in the club, all you have to do is move your body provocatively- a la Pussycat Dolls. Just watch one of their videos or any other sultry female artist (or better yet, imitate the "video vixens" in rap videos by artists like Ludacris or T.I.) and practice in the mirror. Roll your hips seductively, slowly run your hands over your body, just pretend you're in a music video. That worked for me.

The less talented dancers of yore used to watch show like American Bandstand to gain dancing skills. Now adays, we have the music video.

Try watching "Fergalicious" or Nelly Furtado's "Maneater" or "Promiscuous" (she CANNOT dance but still manages to look great!) and there's some pretty sweet moves in George"s "Talk to Me". Practise in you living room with your friends and tell them to make sure you don't do anything embarrassing.

Or get a big mirror and practise in front of that and nix anything you don't like.

Watch shows like "So You Think You Can Dance" and "Dancing with the Stars".

Practise, practise, practise. It is key to becoming comfortable with it.

Just remember that the world is full of beautiful women who cannot dance.
