I would say (as everyone else has suggested) a Dyson is a good choice if you are interested in keeping with an upright style. It is a bit pricey as there range is somewhere within $199 - $349 depending on the model you like. Now you may perhaps be thinking that this must be a good product because everyone above me (and myself included) are suggesting it – but WHY is it so good? Well, the reasons can mainly be summarized in these four reasons:
1st) The Dyson delivers constant suction all the time!
2nd) It has both the versatility to function on carpet and hard-floors.
3rd) Through its unique engineering, it not only has amazing suction power, but it also exhaust *only* fresh, clean air.
4th) Lastly, unlike other name brand vacuums, the Dyson costs practically nothing to maintain. They actually claim that there is NO cost – but that is unrealistic, because there is always a potential for an accident or small break in some part for the product and naturally they will charge you for that replacement. Hence, that claim they make is false, so I say "practically nothing".
However, if the Dyson in somewhat outside of the price range you were looking for, you might also be interested in a Dirt Devil model. While they are not as powerful (suction wise) as the Dyson, it still retains some admirable features such as bagless canister, which means never wasting money or time on replacement bags. As well, it also has a Micro Fresh filter (which simply is a filter located inside the vacuum that traps more than 99% of dust and allergens from the air), a powerful 12-amp motor and plenty of other features. I have included the website to both manufacturers for your convenience so that you can compare & contrast the things you like and might dislike between the two. I personally have both...Ha Ha! But, I live in a family of six, and the Dyson is for the deep-down, heavy cleaning. The Dirt Devil is used more frequently for like minor dirt spills and so forth. In any case, hope I offered you some help!

Can't reccomend a trusty upright but I can tell you that dyson are not all they are cracked up to be. I used to run a specialist cleaning co. so I've used them all. Best hoover for quality and durability is neumatics Henry. Costs less than 100 pounds, is built to a proffesional standard, has a large capacity and can be used without a bag. Have used them for years in the toughest circumstances and some have lasted as much as 10 years with only minor problems occuring. Not upright unfortunately, but used by hotels, pro cleaning companies and businesses. Why?

Have to admit I succumbed to a Dyson 2 years ago. It will frighten the life out of you when you realise just how much your Hoover didn't pick up. Don't buy one though if you've got a deep pile carpet. The suction is so great you can only pull it backwards.

Nilfisk. Not pretty, but absolutely bulletproof, and enough suction that I fear for the tacks holding our carpet down every time I use it.
Don't get a Dyson - the ads are lies! They lose suction just like any other vacuum cleaner. The ones with metal filters (rather than plastic ones) might be better, but everything's totally overpriced because of the hype around them.

They are generally easy to repair. There isn't much to go wrong with them. You may be able to resurrect it. If not, get whatever meets your needs within your budget.
