There was a practice from time immemorial (even existing today) among Indians of preserving a piece of the umblical chord of the newborn in a small metal casket (talisman) and tieing this talisman around the waist of the child.

it got its start when they started doing test tube pregnancies.. do a search on test tube babies and the research of it...thats how i found out!
