The chorion of a mosquito egg is a fairly complex proteinaceous matrix, comprised of a smooth inner layer (endochorion) and external lamellar layers and tubercles.

When first laid, the eggs are soft and moist, and vulnerable to dessication, however within hours relatively complex biochemical interactions and enzymatic activiy within the chorion cause the shell to darken and harden, protecting the egg. Once hardened, some mosquito eggs can last for months or even years until inundated with water and hatching is triggered.

The exact composition and enzymatic activity varies from species to species of mosquito, depending on their particular ecological niches.
