You just leave out information. Don't lie about it just talk about whatever situation and leave out certain details so it won't exactly be lying but it won't be telling the whole truth either. Now if they ask you specifically about the details you left out then you either lie or tell the truth...no getting out of that one.

From what i gather, you don't feel comfortable lying to someone, even though sometimes you're put in the situation of having to 'cover' a part of the truth.
There are two sides of the situation you're describing:
1. Lying to people is "acceptable" if the part you "omit" would cause unnecessary pain. If that is the case, you simply don't speak of that situation/issue, as if it never even existed. You shouldn't use this option unless it's something the other person should really, really, not know.
2. Telling someone you can't tell them the whole truth, may be done not for the protection of that person, but to reveal to them that you hold a great secret you can't tell, in the attempt of making them jealous or for them to inquire further until you give in. This second option might not be the answer you were looking for, and even though it may not be your case, it is a viable probability in the every-day life.

Yes - I've had to make Statements in High Court on several occasions. A couple of times it's been funny because I was interpreting for someone profoundly deaf with little understandable speech, but the oath was still for them to tell the truth, not sign the truth.

Logically, you cannot! If you leave anything out, then it isn't the "whole truth". Maybe that will work for you, but it sounds like you need to come clean. I tend to do what you're talking about sometimes (I don't even know why!), but I know it bugs me and I always feel better after telling the truth. Also, the reaction of people I care about is almost NEVER as bad as I thought it'd be.

The unfortunate thing about this is that it 'has' to be one or the other. You're either lying or telling the truth. I guess you could 'omit' some of the truth if it helps your cause at that moment, but usually, it'd have to be one or the other.

I do it all the time. I don't volunteer information and leave out key elements that may get me in trouble. Don't feel bad about it, everyone does it. But don't lie to cover up the gaps.

Well, you are lying if you only tell part of it aren't you? If you do things that are that bad, best to start changing and do what you are not afraid to admit. That is integrity and it is necessary to become a mature, functioning adult.
