If I haven't been offered the position yet (but think there's a good chance I will), should I bring this up before or after I actually start working? I have already made travel arrangements, so postponing my trip is not an option. Thanks for the advice.

Do not do it until they formally offer you the job. Otherwise, they'll see you as rude and selfish, and you definately won't get the job. Once they extend the job offer to you, you can let them know kindly that you will need a few days. Most employers are understanding about this, because they realize you will need time to settle into your new job and tie up any loose ends.

The question is, which is more important? The job or the travel? One of them has to give way. It won't be good for your image to be requesting time off for a travel (which might be for pleasure) if you've just started a new job. However, if you really don't need the job, don't accept the offer at all. Go on your trip.

Shauna has hit it right on the head. After they have offered you the position, you can kindly let them know about your non-refundable trip that will require some time away.

I just hired a guy over the summer who is taking 3 weeks in October for his wedding/honeymoon. He told the HR guy once we selected him and they worked it out with me. We have a no days off policy for the first 6 months and this was still no problem.

No worries!
