Well, here in Canada where it gets down to -30 celcius (sometimes colder, especially with wind chill), people tend to wear long underwear or tights under their pants. Some people wear 2 pair of pants. Further protection includes ski pants or a long coat. Leg warmers used to be popular but they are out of 'fashion'. Leg warmers are like a tubular scarf that you wear on your lower legs. Socks are important too. If your have room in your boots, the best thing is to wear a pair of cotton socks with a pair of wool socks over top. There are better socks available made from llama wool. They are very good, but they cost about $30.00/pair. Good boots like Sorels are a good idea too. I absolutely hate the cold up here, but if you have the right gear, it makes it a lot easier to get through it.

Well wool is obviously one of the warmest materials. But it is uncomfortable sometimes. I like wearing fleece pants in the winter, the only disadvantage of them is that the snow sticks to them when I'm shoveling.
