Shakira is incredibly talented. She is NOT phony or "manufactured" - she made HERSELF. She has been writing all of her own songs since she was 8 years old, and recording albums for Sony since she was 13. She has always been able to maintain an incredible amount of creative control over her work - everything from writing the music to video direction and post-production. This would have been unheard of for a young Latina female in the beginning of her career, but she did it. After her first two albums, which were only released in Colombia, EVERY album she has made has been multi-Platinum and award winning. She won 5 Latin Grammys this week, by the way. At her concerts, she gives a hell of a show WITHOUT backup dancers (very rare for female pop stars these days.) You can barely hear her because everyone in the audience is cheering and singing along non-stop. Clearly she has earned her fame. She is also a humanitarian - a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and she started her own charity foundation in Colombia which builds schools for children displaced by violence.

So stop hatin! :-p

p.s., the song, if you're talking about "Hips Don't Lie," is about dancing.

This looks like a rhetorical question to me. I do not buy music, catching it on the fly at rare moments. But it all depends on one's goals. If making money is number one and nothing else comes close and one has those attributes (physical beauty and sings about sex), then that may be all it takes. But my kids (ages 11 & 7) are creative and love to play instruments, sing and dance. To me that is what is importnat, even more than the talent they do have. It should be about personal expression.

It depends on whether the person wants to last more than 6 months. Ultimately the people who last do have some talent, albeit talent lies in the beholder (e.g. Britney Spears, and Marilyn Manson).
