Within popular music, I must say with great sadness that the answer is yes.
Still plenty of great holdovers from the past --- Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, etc. (I doubt that I need to list them for you, T4O)
And still plenty of great guitarists in blues, jazz, bluegrass and other non-commercial genres.
I've heard John Mayer work out on the guitar, and he's really very good, but it seems he'd rather sing in that whispery voice that makes the teenage girls wet their panties.
The Golden Age of Rock Guitar is over, I'm afraid.

I don't think it's gone, but I do think it's changed genres, than what you're probably talking about. Go to any country concert, and you'll hear a totally awesome guitar solo. Brad Paisley is truly gifted, on the guitar. As for the rock guys, we still have Eric Clapton and Santana, and Buddy Guy, and my favorite, Richie Sambora, who's talent on the many guitars he plays is underrated.

No I don't think that it is lost. Like most other arts, there are only a few (Santana, Malmsteen, Satriani) who do it well. The wave of bad solos in the 80's IS lost and needs to stay that way.

Naw man it'll never die....
Been around since the 1600's...
Nothing quite like it.
Still alive at my house , Yet I'm an old guy though.
I just don't see it going away.
I'm happy playing Lakinis Juice or Segovia variation on Silent night.
It'll always be there somewhere man.
Just a lull in the things prolly.

OMG, Ritchie Havens at the Kool-aid days celebration his last guitar solo at the end of Freedom, I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about it. He broke the strings and was so exhausted he fell to the stage floor. IT rocked. He wrote most of Hendrix's songs, ya know. And just GAVE them to him cuz he asked, sitting in a coffeeshop! Oooh, thanks for the memory. I hope he comes back next year. It was FREE, too!

Sometimes I think it is....personally I love them, especially when they make a song seven minutes long....best way to spend the time, listening to a good guitar solo..... :)
