As the first answer says; Wireless (Verizon and some of those). It work like a cell phone, also, check around the campus, some of the Computer Buildings have a Hot Spot and you may be able to use it, if, you have a wireless card. They not provide much security so you may want a good Firewall and Virus Software.

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc

You can get it back:

Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes. This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:
Local Computer Policy
then Computer Configuration
then Administrative Templates then Network then QOS Packet Scheduler and then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth.

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.

How did you like it.please comment.

Note:This trick works only for windows xp sp2 professional and windows 2000 professional. It does not work on windows xp sp2 home edition.

Wow... I can't believe schools still have dial up... That's nuts. Truthfully, I can't think of anything that could speed up your downloads... I've seen some ads online for 'boosts' and what not, but I've heard they're not very effective. If you have a laptop, I'd suggest just going somewhere with wifi (like Starbucks), and sit there till you're done. If you don't have a laptop... *sigh*... I don't know... I think you might be SOL.

Asked my dad about this last night, actually. He said there is some way you can get into the router and "pull the cap off" which will basically freeze everyone else on the system for a few seconds while the file dumps onto your machine at an irrational speed. Its all I know and I hope you can find some help.

YOu could support the music industry and not be part of the reason Tower Records is closing its doors by buying your music and movies... i believe a store purchase takes about anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute.

I can assure you that there's nothing that you can do with a dial up. You will have to go with broadband or wireless. If its not available at school your just out of luck.

Switch colleges or get a wireless network card 802.11a/b/g and see if there is any networks in range that have high speed internet.
