Why WOULDN'T it be legit? My hobby is studying rock music and its precedents and one thing you can definitely cite is: The Blues! How would blues, with its many effects on American and other cultures, be "less worthy" than other forms of music (if that's what you're getting it)?

There's an old song that goes, "The Blues had a baby, and they named it Rock 'n Roll"! Without blues, the musical scene, from R&B all the way up to modern classical, would be very different, and, IMO, much less interesting!

How is the study of culture a legitimate academic endeavor for anyone? This may be your real question. It also suggests a need for justification beyond an academic's answer that knowledge ought to be pursued for its own value. So here is the justification I will give: someone was willing to pay for it. It may be that the student alone is the only person interested in their study, so they are the only person that cares about it. On the other hand, perhaps this student would have a completely different level of seeming legitimacy if the research was funded by MTV or VH1?

To answer your question with itself: we can only guess what you think makes something legitimate.

Cultural Anthropology students study culture and the subculture of "blues" is still a culture. If Cultural Anthropology students were studying memorizing the periodic table instead, would they be legitimate Cultural Anthropology majors?

The blues is a form of folk-art which preserves the heritage and values of central and south United States history and culture, especially African-American culture that was largely not written about. Additionally, the music of the blues had a large impact on later musical traditions, leading into rock and other guitar-driven genres.

That's such a threepart easy question. Ans: Disconnect the red discus from inside the 5"5"5"5" box, so that the all the blues clues can be traced, then put the red discus in the ear and serve.

It is a legitimate academic endeavor. Is it rigorous, though? There are degrees of importance.
