First you want to get rid of your mice problem. If you cover up the hole then the mice will just chew right back through the patched hole or chew another hole somewhere.Decon works good.If you have little kids or pets then do not put it where they can reach it.Putting it in the hole might be a good idea or anywhere you suspect a mouse investation. After no signs of mice in the house for 1 week then patch the hole with wall patching.

Please do not seal the wall with mice in the wall because it is going to stink and you are going to have to put the same hole back in the wall. Use some dry wall to seal the wall. You probably would want to insulate the wall before sealing it. Walmart has the stuff and your hardware store. Please get rid of your mice first.

you should think about getting rid of the mice first then attend to the hole by filling the opening with foam or steel wool and covering with sheet rock or a metal or wooden patch.

You can buy drywall tape. It's a meshlike tape. Then use spackling compound or drywall compound. Just smooth this over the tape. You may have to put some on tape first to get it to stick to wall. then more compound. Smooth it out as much as you can and may require a slight sanding if not smooth.

If you have some old metal window screen around, make a patch with that. Easy to work with and you can just tack it in.
