Synagis® is a prescription medication that can help to prevent serious respiratory illness in babies and young children at high risk for severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) disease.

How Synagis® works

Full-term babies get virus-fighting substances called antibodies from their mothers during pregnancy. These antibodies help to fight RSV and other viruses. But babies born prematurely often do not get enough of these antibodies before birth.

Each dose of Synagis® gives your baby enough RSV-specific antibodies to help fight RSV infection for about 30 days, so a new shot is needed each month during the RSV season. It is very important for your baby to get all of his or her monthly shots to maximize the benefit of therapy.
RSV season usually starts in the fall and runs through the spring.7-10 But it can change. In some areas of the United States, RSV season may last all year. Ask your child’s healthcare provider when RSV season occurs in your area. If your baby is at high risk for RSV disease, be sure to discuss additional protective steps you can take

My daughter was 4 months early and she was on the synagis program. Your pediatrician should have given you info on it. A visiting nurse will come right to your house and give. I stayed in as much as possible in the winter months. I also took alcohol wipes(the ones used when shots are given) and wiped down shopping carts, door handles, etc. I continued doing this till she was 2 since that is when they are most likely at risk. RSV can affect preemies differently than normal kids. Full term babies it will appear as a cold, but it can actually kill preemies if not treated.

My daughter was a preemie and has chronic lung disease. Everything that was listed is correct and good advice, but also limit exposure to others. Other kids especially. I have posted notes on my doors that no one sick is to enter my house. Also when I take my daughter to the doctor, I make them put us back in a room so she is not in the waiting room with other kids. I have two other kids. I'm not a germaphobe or anything. I just do what it takes to protect my child. If others get mad that they can't come around when they are sick/ have a cold then so be it. Your child is more important. My daughter is almost 1 and she recieves the synagis shots too. You can do an internet search to get more info.

RSV is similar to a cold/ flu so the symptoms are about the same. Just be careful who she is around . My children were preemies and they both got RSV. You can't totally prevent her from getting it.

Buy a huge bottle of hand sanitizer and use it very frequently. Also make everyone in the house and anyone coming into the house use it! This won't 100% prevent her from getting RSV, but it should help a little and will also help keep other germs from making her sick. Good luck.
