Especially when you do things you don't want to admit whether you can help it or not?

Set a day and time when you will start telling the truth.

Put the past behind you. Who knows who you might hurt by suddenly confessing the past?

And if you can't help lying, then make an arrangement to see a counselor. Set a limit on the number of sessions you'll see her for. Ten is a nice round number. Just tell yourself that you'll work through this in ten sessions and do it!

First you need to be honest with yourself and admit that you're an outright liar. Then you need to admit to yourself that you want to change. To change start off from the small things and then go to the big. Its not going to be easy because you'll be very tempted to lie again. Being honest comes from within and basically listening to your conscience a lot. I'm pretty sure that it screams at you when you tell a lie. Learn to listen to that voice more. See the things that you would normally lie about and start from there by telling the truth. Everything takes time and its a process.

Well ... good luck.

However, part of this will be figuring out what your lies are.
Its very easy to just say "Tell the truth", but sometimes you've
been lying for so long that you won't even know when you're
doing it. Some will say that you believe your own lie, but I
think its closer to "its just become a habit."

So ... you may want to take inventory of your major lies.

You might want to say, instead of lying about something,
that you don't want to talk about it, or your not proud about
something and would rather avoid talking about it ...

That is, you can defer, rather than lie.

Note, however, that you've got a bunch of people running
around that you have lied to that you need to update. Its
OK to say "Uh ... XXX really wasn't true. I don't want to
talk about that, but I didn't want you to think that XXX was
true."

Be prepared for some uncomfortable silences.

As I said: Good luck!

behavior modification - keep a little notebook with you - one day per page - every time you tell a lie jot it down - try to tell one less lie everyday - review your notes at nite & make a conscious effort the next day to tell less lies - repeat this process, as necessary until you can make it thru a few weeks without lying - it should become a natural process to you eventually to not lie.

stop lying cold or gradually. find out why you lie so much in the first place. you might have a serious problem and might need to seek help.
