Yes, Wheresgeorge is a real web site where you can open an account for free, input the serial number of your bills. The system will tell you if your bill has been entered before and where it came from. If not it will record your location and start a record for the bill. Its just a fun tracking site, you can see where the bill has been before and who had it. People enter things like "got it as change when buying a pizza at Papa John's" or "was given it as a gift by my grandmother."
Contrary to what has been written above, its not just one dollar bills, they also track $5, $10 and $20 bills. They may even track higher denominations for all I know, I never had one in my pocket to try. Actually, I just checked, the track up to $100 bills there.
After you enter the bill number on the site, you're supposed to stamp on the bill the website address encouraging receivers of the bill to go there and input new tracking information.
The system can also detect if you input an incorrect serial number, so the operators/designers must know something about how the numbers are created/assigned to bills to do this.
As far as I know its harmless

The way it works is you enter the bill's denomination, serial number, and series date and it will tell you where in the world other people have entered that bill. If it has been stamped, then it most certainly has been entered at least once, so you can see where that bill came from. It works for all amounts, ones, twos, fives, tens, twentys, fiftys, and hundreds. There is nothing to worry about, this site is safe and trustworthy. It's actually a really cool hobby, and it doesn't cost a cent.
Check out http://www.wheresgeorge.com/report.php?key=18cb84597b7b64edeb734317cea9bf6b88f9e9db85dbe7b0 for an example of the tracking report. Give the site another try, it might just have been down for a bit when you checked it.

www.wheresgeorge.com is used to track dollar (or higher) bills. People have a stamp made and register the bill with wheresgeorge and can see where a bill ends up. Just a fun little thing.

I've never seen it on a $5. It's always been on a $1 (George Washington) I used to be a teller and we got them quite regularly. I would always save them aside, and when I had some free time, go in and enter them before I passed them on to customers. Sometimes I could find the right serial number, and other times not. And, that's all I know about it.
