rub the scuff (lightly at first) with your finger. Try to get this right away as the longer you leave it the harder it will be to remove.
(The scuff is just rubber from the sole flaking off onto a grippy surface (your shoe). )
If this doesn't work there are commercial cleaners you can use. :)

Get some "Armor All" wipes and use those to clean off the scuff marks, works like a charm.

I am in ROTC at my school and we have to shine our shoes everyday. All you need to do is get some black shoe polish, in the can. Then take off the lip and put a little bit of water in the lid. Then get an old clean t-shirt and dab some water on it. Wen the t-shirt is damp rub some shoe polish on it. Then work the polish into the parts that need it in a circular motion. Just does this for several days. Really cake the polish on it really really works. Also they make instant shoe shine sponges which really help witht eh extra shine.

If the shoes are Highly Polished and Sealed Leather-then try rubbing a small amount of White spirit-then wipe it off quickly with a damp cloth soaked in soapy water.

You can use nail polish remover. Just remember to follow up with a good leather boot or shoe cream of the same color as the shoes. This will keep the shoes from becoming brittle and cracking.
