I work for an employment agency, here are a few good ways to follow up, pick the best one for your situation. Good luck, I hope you get it!
1. I am calling to find out if the position for ____ was filled. (if they say no, say:) I am highly interested and would like to know if my application has been considered.
2. I am very interested and would like to know if you have reviewed my application for the ____ position.
3. I am calling regarding my application turned in last Monday. I am available immediately.
Have a great day and again, good luck!

Usually you write a follow up note thanking the person you met with for their time. If you are calling because it's been a long time since your interview then you might want to start by asking where they are in their decision making process. But if the interview just happened, a handwritten note or email is better. Thanking them of course and also mentioning your interest in the position, what you learned about it and the company, etc. I have to interview people from time to time in my company and when people call too soon or too often afterward, it's kind of a turn off- kind of pushy. Therefore I think writing is better but you decide.

You could call and ask if the position is filled yet. Or say you're calling to make sure that they received your application/resume.

Good day (afternoon or whatever time of the day).
My name is ..........................
I submitted an application for employment in your organization (number of days ago).
I am checking up to ascertain the position in respect of my application, and to determine when we can meet to further discuss the issue of my potential service to your organisation.
When will it be convenient for you to meet with me?
