The Detroit-based singer refused to sing the American National Anthem at the World Series in Detroit because he thinks it too "vocally challenging" for him. Instead, he chose to sing "America the Beautiful." Nobody seems to care about that. Why not?

Bob Seger could barely contain himself when talking Friday about his opportunity to sing “America the Beautiful” before tonight’s World Series opener.

“They called a couple weeks ago,” Seger said, and then whipped into a whirlwind of all the baseball improbables that happily brought the series to Comerica Park.

The choice to sing “America” rather than the “Star Spangled Banner” was his call, he said. The national anthem, he said, “is a death trap for singers. ... At 61, you get smarter.”

National Anthem Singers: Game 1: Bob Seger (sang "America the Beautiful"); Game 2: Anita Baker; Game 3: Trace Adkins; Game 4: Nikko Smith (son of Cardinals Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith); Game 5: Billy Ray Cyrus

I thought it was, just not televised. Here's a better question, why can't people just sing the damn song the way it was written, instead of improvising it to make it sound like their own. Nothing like waiting 4 and a half minutes for a song that should take about 1:00 tops.

Apparently Bob Singer finds the "Star-Spangled Banner" too difficult to sing, so he opted for "America The Beautiful," which is sometimes -- but rarely -- used instead of "Banner."

it was played. I was at the game. It sounded wonderful. I don't think I'll ever forget how wonderful it sounded. You might have been out of the room or something. Maybe turned the tv on too late.
