my coworker goes on and on about how she doesnt like the supervisor and how bad she treats her and im like ok enough is enough so i stay quiet most of the time when she comes in. i dont want to hear negative stuff all day. she feels that the boss wants to be her so bad that she will fake being polite, blah, blah, blah. then she talks about her failing marriage and beats that to the bone. im tired of talking about negative stuff, alot of times i feel like she likes to keep stuff going. now she seems to think she is better than some people. when im quiet she thinks i have an attitude. i just want to come to work and do my job. i dont care about what everyone else is doing.

we both work at the front counter. alot of times she talks about things that i dont particularily care about but as much as i try to ignore her it gets harder. some days when she is out, i am happy to be by myself at the front desk.

I've dealt with people similar to your co-worker. The best thing that worked for me is to not listen; ie get up and walk a way or politely state "I'm sorry I'd really like to listen but I have an important project due or I'm really busy today". You can also change the subject to something positive. Most negative people hate that. If she states her failing marriage say something like "I have the perfect husband or I just love being married, Isn't it great?" The more positive you are the more she will hate to be around you. Or you can put it to her straight. Tell her it is none of your concern how her boss treats her or her personal life.

tell her that you really have no interest in her personal life and to stop complaining about it to you. if she really needs to talk about it to someone, tell her to go to a therapist or to find somebody else that will listen. also mention that you come to work to do your job, not to sit around and gossip.

get up and walk away when she comes over or better yet, just tell her that you dont care and not to bring it up with you and end the subject
