The cartoon was called Turbo Teen, a 12 episode series back in 1984. The main character was named Brett Mathews and he became Turbo Teen when he skidded his car into a government laboratory. He was actually turned into a Chevy Camaro, sister car to the Trans-Am.

turbo teen was the bomb i used to watch it on saturday mornings in my underwear eating probably ice cream or a peanut butter n jelly sandwich. it cam eon nbc i think. iteh white guy turned into the car when he got hot and human when he was cold via a special laser beam. his friends a white girl and a black guy were always riding him and sometimes saving him
