I was a social worker before I became a lawyer. I really learned so much about people in the worst of conditions. So many of us can live our whole lives and never have to be around people who can't read, don't know where they might get their next meal from or are dealing with horrible societal diseases like drugs. I think it made me more compassionate and it gave me a better world view.

One learns that helping another human being in his/her life is a lot more rewarding than receiving a paycheck once a week for doing paperwork. I am not putting down people who work in offices, my husband works in an office. I just think social workers show compassion towards others, and we need that in the world we live in today.

We did foster care in the past. What I learned was how hard it can be to help people that sometimes are too proud to accept it. Yet they still needed it. And the benefits are amazing, to see changed lives.
But it is very hard.

One learns truths of human existence. One learns about the best and the worst of the human spirit and mind.
One learns charity, if one is inclined to be ethical.
