can i ask why you think everyone would be dead? i think if something could kill the whole world it could break a time capsule...i don't think everyone will die in 2020....as long as a nuclear war doesn't break out or anything...naturally, the earth is doomed to die when the sun dies...or eight minutes after, technically....but that won't be until your great great great great grandchildren are alive.....

Time capsules are used to give people in the future perspective and people in the present awareness. If everyone is dead in 2020 then it won't matter and the question won't matter. This type of fatalistic thinking can be applied to almost the whole outlook of the future and life and no one would do anything if they focused on it and believed it where true. For such a scenario may come come to pass 2 years from now, or 20,000 years from now or never. Part of the nature and value system of civilized people is to leave some heritage, some message of worth, some betterment now for those in the future that can benefit. In that action and belief, civilization has marched on and the state of man has improved from the stone age until now, although painfully and maybe not as quick and neat as we would like, nonetheless, it has happened and will continue to happen and anyone with awareness and perspective knows it and wishes it to continue for future generations. May hope increase. Peace to you.

Well if everyone one the earth is dead by 2020 then the time capsule won't be opened, at least not by humans. Why are you expecting something to happen?

perhaps everyone does die, and perhaps everyone on terra is deceased prior to 2020, then a legacy for extra terrestrial's will have been left so that they might understand to some small degree who us terrans were as a culture and as individuals, or even whatever the next pregenative sentient creatures who take over this speck of cosmic dust , willdiscover in an archialogical dig and learn about our lost civilization, and it will probably be the cockroaches who will grow and mutate to become sentient after we are gone.

True enough but why should I live my life as if me and everyone I know was going to die by 2020? I have to at least assume I am going to live so I can prepare for it.
