I am doing a lesson plan for a 7th grade class (it's an English class, but I am trying to cross it over with current events) where I use Time Magazine for Kids. Then, the students will pick a story (usually there are at least three news stories) and write a paragraph about the topic and what they thought about the story, What do you think? Any suggestions for improvement? I am planning on grading their pragraphs for grammatical errors, etc.

this is just an idea but with elections coming up and all how about YOU pick out a bunch of diffrent stories from the magazine and hand them out in class. tell your students that they are the new president and this matter was brought to thier attention, now they, as the new pres., have to deside what needs to be done next and how the matter could be solved or how they could keep it from happening again... i think that would be a little more interesting for them to write and for you to read later on!
hope this helps!
and please do excuse my spelling and grammer!!!!

That's pretty good. I seem to remember that around 7th grade was when I was starting to be required to write essays and theses, so it's about time to get them going.

As a scientist, it's amazing now how many 20 and 30 year olds still can't write anything structured. Resumes are also a lost cause sometimes.

It's important for kids to learn at an early age the use of a theme and a topic sentence, as well as development of an essay - intro, body, conclusion, etc.

If you're having a hard time, don't stop at the Time. Let the kids use anything - newspapers, internet stories, magazines, etc. Some kids may care less about Bush vs the World and so the exercise may become laborious or a chore. But if they can get passionate about sports or hobbies, then the writing will start to come more naturally.

I agree with Gina S. I have a 8th grade daughter, and forth and Kindergarten. My fourth grader writes a lot more then my 8th grader. I think if you let them start out with more interesting topics to them they would do better. But also, after that, make them read/use more important articles.

If the articles in the magazine are on the subject of rights for children or racism or whatever , I would prepare a little information sheet for the kids, on each topic and go through it with them.
Then when they are writing their paragraphs on the stories they picked they can use your info. sheets if they get stuck.

Kind of like reference sheets to help them out.
Tell them they have to refer to the sheets you gave them in their answers
