The most important part of college is to attend and to turn SOMETHING in on the deadline. Even if it's not quite 500 words it will be just one grade if it's not an "A" you have time left in the semester to bounce back. Also, if you can clearly make your point (depending on the subject, if it's a writing class then you should probably type the appropriate number of words), if your essay covers your topic completely and is supported by original thought and support from your text, then you should be good. It's not your fault you can write in a condense and concise form and cover your topic thoroughly with 150 less words then the rest of his/her students.

350 word of a well-crafted and polished essay would get an A from me in that assignment. I will always prefer shorter to longer if the longer is just padding. 500 words or less should legitimately include 350, if they are the right 350.

At the end of the essay, say "The man then wrote the following essay" - Then you can repeat the 350 words and have a 707 word essay.

when profs say 500 words max. they mean get a close to 500 words as you can. its unlikley you can get all the info they want in only 350 words. leave the paper for a few hours, then go back to it and see where you can flesh out some parts.

shoot for 450 if you can extend the setences .for instance instead of Ia m doing this because the teacher told me to. expand it by saying I am currently in the process of writing this paper for my teacher at this length as that is the requirements for this .

10% either way is acceptable. More or less than this could lose you marks.
