I have already signed the contract that requires I participate in 'productions'. After signing, I was shown the costume and it is a character/person that has been personally offensive and cruel to me. This person is is awful, and I do not want to be forced to emulate him. I cannot even think of having to be forced to wear this costume without tears coming to my eyes. Are there any legal grounds (severe emotional distress?) that I can stand on?

You cant do anything, you signed a contract. It is legal and binding. Youre in an adult world so do yourself a favor and grow the f up.

Don't listen to everyone who says you have to do something you despise.

There is a constitutional ban against slavery, and no one can force you to work at something you don't want to do.

That being, said, they might try to sue you for breach of contract, and there's no telling whether or not they'd be successful. You might want to talk to a lawyer.

if you are a performer then you should just act the part. It isnt like you are becoming this person you dispise. It also might be a good because of your feelings about this person You could use them to act the part and even be better at portraying them.

"pretend" you do not despise you. So you think everyone should have the right to create their costume? "I am offended by this color, I refuse to wear it".

Get over your emotional crap and do the job you agreed to do.

A true performer would consider it a challenge. Go with it .
