average is 6-8 pounds (with 8 being considered the large end of average) although anyone between 5 -12 pounds is still normal. The weight is largely genetic. Ask yourself: How many pounds did you weigh at birth? What about your siblings? How old was your mom when she gave birth (older women typically have heavier babies). How old was your first born (if this is a second child). But most importantly, no matter the weight of the baby, they all come out :) Studies have shown that a lighter baby doesn't hurt less than an average or larger baby during delivery. As long as the baby is healthy, you have nothing to worry about.
