Forget Linux if you actually want to run anything of worth! Have you considered giving Vista a run? Was close to ditching Windows myself at the beginning of the year, but after giving Vista a good run for it's money for over 6mths, wouldn't consider moving away.

You CAN also install OS X on a PC if you know where to look (incidentally OS X runs faster on a PC that it does on Apple's own hardware - thus why they have tried to delete this version!) Have a look around for OSx86...if you want email me and will send you an invite ticket for Demonoid.com - is a bittorrent host which also has a tonne of info on installing OSx86 :)

One of the most popular and upcoming OS's that is FREE and has all free software with it, like word programs and etc... is known as http://www.ubuntu.com

Ubuntu is created by a guy who is dedicated to bringing down Bill Gates and his market.

Most likely Ubuntu would work fine on your machine...

You will need 1 burnable CD, you will need to burn the download to CD and you can install it from there.

Always remember that a NEW OS, such as LINUX or MAC OSX is like learning a new language, its a little challenging.

Ubuntu is very easy.

Windows is Microsoft. Costs money
Mac OS X is based off of UNIX. Costs Money

Redhat Linux AKA Fedora Core is free depending on which version you get, not as easy to learn.

Ubuntu is also based off of unix/linux.

PS: ONE of the COOLEST THINGS about ubuntu, is that you can actually RUN THE OS from CD without installing or formatting your machine.... !!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS WAY you can see if you actually like it before taking the time to install it !!!!!!!!
