By the number of tickets sold. So yes, even those tickets sold but not used are counted.

Generlly you here the tickets sold as the numbed. Sometimes they use a gate number as well, which means they have the numbers count through the turnstile basically using it as a little clicker, or just an estimate of how many empty seats seem to be there. Normally though it will be tickets sold that is the announced number.

Nowadays tickets sold are counted differently from attendance. Because every ticket is now scanned at many venues, and because many turnstiles are now hooked into centralized systems, stadiums can count both ticket sales AND people actually through the gates.

If you hear the words "paid attendance," that means tickets sold. If you hear "attendance," it could mean either tickets sold or people who came in through the turnstiles.

Also, another way they do it is work out how many cans of coke were sold. If the average spectator drinks 2 can at any one event and x number of cans are sold, divide this number by two and you have your attendance rate.

Yeah RIGHT! hehehe tickets.
