I suppose it's how extreme a form of their religion they follow. Look at the number of so called honour killings happening, where people have relationships outiside their social or religious background. It's rather worrying- i was watching it on crime watch the other night.

That's a bit like saying are all people fat! It simply isn't possible to generalise for an entire 'faith'.
I expect there are insular Muslims whose family traditions will govern aspects of a marriage - like choosing a partner, and there are Muslims who will eventually take on the customs of their current homelands - which offer more freedom of choice - particularly in personal relationships and where human emotions are concerned.
There are already signs that second and third generation Muslims in the UK prefer to make their own choice of life partner, rather than have an arranged marriage.
I don't think the Jews will ever change, although they aren't in to 'arranged' marriages - just marriages within their religion. The Roman Catholics are the same as the Jews except that if you are RC and marry out of the faith your children should be brought up in the RC faith - like Prime Minister Blair's children as his wife is RC.
Until human nature gets a look in there will be a section of the Muslim religion who will continue to disown their children if they marry a partner outside Islam.
It is sad that your Christian Asian friend is not approved of by his new wife's family and that she has been disowned by them. Good Luck to them I say - forget the family and go and have a good life with the one who really loves you - your wife, as she was prepared to risk losing her family for her new husband.

Hhhmm.... Are (Any Religion) too insular?!
Depends on the person.
To answer the rest of your question though in Islam a boy is allowed to marry a woman of any religion on condition that the children are brought up Muslim.
Girls are supposed to marry a Muslim man. There is no law against him becoming Muslim though. A few of my cousins married men who converted to marry them. This does not mean their husbands immediately turned into idiots.
Some of them married men who were not. Some members of the family don't talk to them any more but most do.
It depends on the family.

why is it insular if we follow the religions practice?
just because love is not permitted, we are being labeled insular?
according to islam, the person who you are wed with must be a muslim. some islamic groups says that you can marry an orthodox jewish or orthodox christians. I mean she was born a muslim, taught to be a muslim, religion is life, and she is willing to turn her back from religion and her family. all she is thinking is love and that love conquers all. that has to the most crappy statement ever. no wonder divorce in the west is so high. people expect when they marry, they only marry the person they are wed, they forger this person comes with a family that created her
I guess you need to learn more about the Islamic religion before you can just labeled it like that.

I think the way you could have asked this question is
"Are (religion here) too insular?"
I am christian, and was not able to date a girl that I liked in college because she belonged to a different christian sect (one that demanded you go to church everyday!)
I knew a guy that was told by his parents he couldn't marry a woman because she wasn't "American".
Religion is often used as an excuse. Sometimes people just don't like each other.

From what I can see, Muslims are just like other groups, made up of good and bad, and all shades in between.
At the end of the day, they are just humans like the rest of us, and we should not generalise about them.

no, i would say many muslims have assimilated into the west's culture quite well, those who live here.
there are plenty christian families who don't like us to marry out as it were, mine included, but seeing as i am a treacherous lesbo, then i can marry who the dickens i want. any takers? lol.....
