Question: I took three home pregnancy tests and they were negative, but I still haven't gotten my period -- it's more than two weeks late. What's going on?

Answer: If all three tests were negative, you're almost certainly not pregnant. Women can stop having regular periods for many reasons, including stress and excessive exercise. Your ovaries normally release one egg every month or so, and about 14 days after the egg is released, if it's not fertilized, the inner lining of your uterus sheds and menstruation starts. If your ovaries aren't releasing eggs the way they should, then your uterus may not be receiving all the signals it needs to start your period. Sometimes women have to take birth control pills to help their ovaries and uterus communicate so they can have regular periods. If you miss more than three periods in a row and pregnancy tests are negative, your doctor should give you a thorough evaluation in case something's wrong. Two possibilities are:
• Thyroid problems. If your thyroid gland (which controls your body's metabolism) isn't working properly, it could interfere with your periods. Other symptoms of a thyroid problem include extreme tiredness, hair loss, weight gain, and a constant feeling of being cold when everyone else is comfortable. A simple blood test will determine whether your thyroid is doing its job; you can correct the condition with medication.

• Too much prolactin. You might miss a period (or more than one) if your brain is producing an abnormally high level of the hormone prolactin. A woman's body usually makes prolactin when she's breastfeeding, which is why menstruation generally stops when she's nursing. If this is what's happening to you, you may notice a milky discharge from your nipples. This condition can usually be treated with medication.

If you were on the shot and just got off 3 months ago then sometimes it takes a while for you period to come back. You should go to the doctor and have them do a pregnancy test, if their test come up negative they can tell you what else may be the problem. I know I went through a time where I'd skip periods or have periods a week apart and I found out I had endometriosis so get yourself checked right away.

If you stopped taking the pill and you have unprotected sex and you haven't had a period in 3 months and you gained weight then its pretty obvious. But you should ask your Doctor instead of asking on this site. :\

Hi
I would go to your family doctor and explain that situation. I know when I got pregnant the same thing happened. They are concerned when a pregnancy test says negative. You can do a pee test and a bllod test to let you know. Do this soon so that you have answers and not worry too much.

You said you used the shot. if you are talking about depo (which made me gain a ton of weight too) then that could be a reason you are not having your periods, it stops them and can take up to a year to recover.

but i agree you should ask your gyno if you have questions about it.

it could be the after affects of the depoprevara shot. I didn't have a period for six months after the shot was supposed to have worn off.

See a doctor/

go to the doctors because tests are not always right the doctor can take a blood sample to see if you are pregnant and the results are more reliable plus it could be something else it could be stress some women miss there periods through stress it could be a number of things.

I hate this category. Every day there is some goof wanting to know if she is pregnant or not....what, you think there is a bunch of gynocologists sitting around here just waiting to answer those questions.

Duh - you answered your own question. It must be something else!
