I've thought about doing a PGCE for ages, but always allowed my mother to tell me I'd make a terrible teacher. All my friends and people I meet say they think I'd be a good teacher. I'm a "people person", I communicate well, I have experience of working with teenagers, and I love my subject (English). I'm almost a hundred percent certain that's it's the right thing to do, but I still have this little voice in my head (my mum's!) telling me I wouldn't be any good.

(serious answers only please)

Just to clarify, I have a BA (Hons) degree in English already, so I am qualified to do the PGCE.

Guess you wont know until you try. I spent four years of college to be a teacher, did student teaching and hated it. I felt the same as you...loved kids, projected well, had lots of friends but teaching was not for me. I wish I had been able to do student teaching before I finsished college with a degree in education. In my days, student teaching was the last thing you did before graduation. I love the teaching aspect but could not get on with administration. Because I was sensitive to the needs of kids, I had issues with the curriculum not meeting the needs of individuals. Only trying teaching will help you know and let your mum eat cake while you try. Maybe she's right, maybe not..only you can know and you cant know til you try.

If you like teenagers that is the most important qualification. I'd say by all means go for it!! Is your mum a teacher? I just retired from 26 years of teaching middle school, and if you have the desire to teach, you will do well. No worries!!

DO IT! It's your life, not your mother's. Listen to YOUR little voice, not hers!
