This is a bit obscure, because the World Cup as we know it today was not the first football World Cup.
Regarding the international version, played in Germany earlier this year, the first winners were Uruguay, who also won the second one 4 years later.
However, there was a 4 team competition played in Italy prior to the instigation of the World Cup proper, in which a league club from each of 4 nations were invited to compete. By an error a small team from the North East of England was invited, because the Italians forgot to put Woolwich in front of Arsenal on the invite. The gunners were still called Woolwich Arsenal in those days, and were the cup winners that year. Ironically, the small geordie club won the tournament beating the best in Italy and Europe. They were West Auckland.

The first two World Cup matches took place simultaneously, and were won by France and the USA, who beat Mexico 4-1 and Belgium 3-0, respectively. The first goal in World Cup history was scored by Lucien Laurent of France. Four days later, the first World Cup hat-trick was achieved by Bert Patenaude of the USA in the Americans' 3-0 win against Paraguay. In the final, Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in front of a crowd of 93,000 people in Montevideo, and became the first nation to win a World Cup.
That was in 1930 !!

The first "real" world cup was the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy. It was won by West Auckland a team from the north east in the 1900's I think, the game was played in Turin. There was a play / film about it in the early 1990's starring Denis Waterman it was called a Captain's Tale, I think you can get it on DVD or video.

the first international world cup was won by Uraguay, but there was a competition that was regarded as the world cup prior to this that club teams played in from all over the globe.
the winners of this were west auckland, who were mistakenly invited to the competition as the organisers thought they were inviting Woolich Arsenal, who today are known as Arsenal.
West Auckland turned up an won, if you go to the West Auckland club house, who play in the Northern League it has newspaper cuttings telling the story of them winning the world cup.
it also states this when driving in to the borough of West Auckland (holders of the 1st World Cup)
