No matter what P2P site you use (morpheus, bearshare, limewire) keep your virus protection updated. ALL of them have viruses and whoever thinks they don't is kidding themselves.
Now, I've used limewire for over 3 years and have not had any problems (I keep my virus protection updated every year)
I found this process one the easiest in the long run. Here's what you do:
go to: start>set program acess and defaults>
it should come up "choose a configuration">custom>click the arrow and it will drop down.
Scroll down a bit and you will come to "choose a default media player" choose iTunes.
If you already have limewire, then go to the top tab "tools">options>player>uncheck the box that says to use limewire player>restart your computer.
Now all your songs will be in iTunes format and you don't have to worry about converting anything. Just download from limewire, double click the song and iTunes opens up, drag and drop to your playlist.

Depending on your tastes, I'd recommend bleep.com. Unlike iTunes, the music files are not digitally protected so you can make as many copies as you like and play on any MP3 player, not just an iPod. It's 20p per track more expensive than iTunes if you buy tracks individually, but it works out at about the same if you buy whole albums, They also offer FLAC (free lossless audio codec) for some tracks, and most MP3s are encoded at 320kpbs which gives you much better quality than iTunes' 128kpbs AAC.

get an external hard drive and pass it around to people that have music on there computers and soon you will have more music then you know what to do with
i know i do and you can use your external drive as a back up for anything they cost about a dollar a gig. 80 gigs is a great start and you can move music to anywhere including your ipod your friends ipod and you don't have to pay a cent plus your ipod will last about a year before it dies i have had my external drive like double that time and it is cheaper
