The idea has some merit, but you've gone about it all wrong. We don't tax smokers, we tax cigarettes. It's basic economics. By raising the price of the cigarettes, we reduce some of the demand, reducing consumption and adding to tax xrevenues, which we need to do because smoking causes health problems that increase the burden on tax payers.
I don't think we should have an obesity tax, because it would be too hard to administer. What about people who gained 5 pounds over the holidays? Would we weigh everyone every day to see how much we should charge them?
What we could, and probably should, do is tax foods that contribute to obesity, such as candies and high-fat foods. I don't think it would be very popular, but it might be effective. If you think about it, even a thin person who is wolfing down artery-clogging meals isn't doing himself or anyone else any favors and could also become a burden to tax payers.

No but I think they should pay for higher insurance premiums. It sucks that me myself pretty slim, take care of my body, eats pretty healthy has to pay the same amount as the 300 pound coworker with Diabetes, and about 20 other fat related illnesses goes to the Dr every week and still eats crap food and smokes..... does not even try to make themselves better.
IT"S NOT FAIR. I should only pay a small amount and they should pay triple...because it is this obesity problem that is driving up all insurances rates everywhere.

And smokers should pay more taxes for their excessive health bills?
And people who have drink problem should pay more because of the strain they put on the NHS?
And what about anorexics? They should pay more too because they are always using the NHS too
And how about old people? They use up loads of money and give nothing back what so ever?
And children, don't forget children. I mean, what do they do? They don't work or pay taxes and we education them for nothing.
And cancer patients they should have made provision before getting it to make sure they aren't a drain so perhaps we should start a cancer tax just in case one day we succumb.
I hope that you realise that this is how ridiculous it could become if we start thinking that taxes are going to solve the problems of obesity in this country - it is not going to stop people from over eating just as putting huge taxes on cigarettes has stopped people from smoking. Educating people about the dangers of being grossly overweight will help in a a small way but more it's a case of stopping people from eating over processed food that contains empty calories and getting them to make sure that their children eat sensibly too.

You must think skinny people should pay an anorexia tax, also, right?
Small minded people like to blame others for the problems in our world. You want to stop obesity? Go to your local school and demand that they serve healthy lunches to your children. No soda machines, no junk, no french fries...healthy, good food! While you're at it, go to the principal and demand that Physical Education (PE) be manditory as it was 40 years ago in all schools. Please also see to it that they include a Health and Hygeine class. A class on GOOD MANNERS would also be appropriate in your case. We are what we are taught. Laughing at a person who is obese or being disgusted by fat people is a crime on your part. Now, go back under your rock where you came from!

Well that would solve the financial problems of all the nations now wouldn't it ? But you better be prepared to pay it too, now-a-days if you are 10 pounds overweight the charts refer to you as obese, 15-20 pounds overweight and you are considered Morbidly Obese. With the costs of food being what they are (.69-.99 cents for ONE orange) it is no wonder people are only able to afford the less healthy food.

People, who through their own choices place a burden, financial or other, on other people should be asked to pay compensation (tax, fine, etc).
Obese people as well as smokers and alcoholics put a large and unnecessary cost burden on the health care system, and I think that it is unfair.
In automotive traffic for example, people who chose to park wherever they want, receive tickets and have to pay fines - so why should it be that in health care there is no such compensating measure for wilfully inflicted additional burden to the system?
Airlines should also introduce extra wide seats in a few rows for obese people (let's say with a BMI over a certain tolerance) that cost 20% extra, as it is a significant burden for a normal sized person to sit next to someone who completely spills over the edges of his/her seat.

No, but I think people that think they're better than other people and and that have nothing better to do than to point their hypocritical poop stained fingers at people and then demand that our corruptament enforce communistic laws in order to force other people to be like them, should be exiled from the country along with the commie lawyers and legislators that would attempt to enact such insane legislation.
