American scales read in pounds, because pounds can be pounds force or pounds mass, but Kilograms are just mass, the unit of force is Neutons, which take into account the force of gravity.

Most American countries use scales to measure an object's weight, or Earth's gravitational pull on it, while most European countries use balances to measure its mass- a measure of the amount of matter in the object. The reason for European countries to measure mass instead of weight is because mass is a more reliable way to measure things, because it doesn't change in relation to your position on Earth.

All scales measure in force (Newtons), but they are calibrated to read a different unit.
So if you're 50kg according to a scale, you're really 50kg*9.8N/kg
but it has a calibrated scale with factors of 9.8, so you only see the 50kg piece.
