I believe in Karma, not that I need a reason to be good. Why would you want to be anything else?
The nicest thing about being good is seeing the positive effect it has on people (well, most people), and you can get some satisfaction from knowning you just made someone elses day that little bit better just by smiling when you see them.

Different things motivate different people. My motivation to be good is usually to avoid the hassles that come from not doing the right thing to begin with.

Up to a point, good deeds are tied in with being imparted with good values. The motivation may come from the environment or from within (approval seeking vs free choice/conscience)

I believe the environment around you is what is a helping factor. If someone expects you to be worthless, you become what is expected of you. If people around you expect you to be great, you will strive to be great. Kind of like dress for success. IF doing this permits people to think you are successful, you will strive to prove them right. So really YOU are the part of the motivating factor. Teach people how to treat you or think of you, by acting the part of what you want to be!!

Putting yourself in the other persons shoes, knowing it'll keep the bad away and perhaps the thought of a little bit of luck coming your way as a result. So probably 60% selfishness, which is not good.

Fear in the case of many religions - but people can also be good in return for peace, praise, promotion, money, material goods etc. Even if we are not conscious of being good for a reason, there are usually underlying forces at work.
