I Turned the switch off while it was shutting down, thinking that it was finished...did this do any damage. Often if the computer gets caught in some loop where I cannot get out of I have to "pull the plug" since nothing else works/...is this not the same.....

No, if you do it once. but if you keep doing that yes it can cause file corruption.
Some program is obviously not shutting down. I would consider a repair or reload.

While it may not hurt it the first time or two.. "Pulling the Plug" can eventually mess up your harddrive. Usually this problem is caused by a program that is running that windows fails to stop. If you know what program is causing the hold up then you can just close the program yourself before you shutdown the computer. If you aren't sure of which program it is then you could try to isolate it by closing all running programs except one and then shutting down, then if there is no problem, try another one... Look in the the area near the clock on your computer for programs that are running.. You might be able to tell what the icons are just by looking at them but if you can't, just let your mouse hover over them one at a time and read the info. that comes up in the little tan pop up. Some things like the "sound icon" won't be the problem, it will most likely be a program that you downloaded or installed recently.

you have a program running that's hanging up.

hit start buttun, run, type in msconfig and click on ok

an app will pop up. click on the start up tab.
now the fun begins. uncheck a program, reboot, see if that solve your problem, if not that one, try another. one of them is the culprit. Once you figure out which one it is, uninstall it.
