The French, British and Russians had equal to or superior armour at the beginning of the war. As the person alluded to above, the German tactics won the initial battles....massed tanks at the point of attack, rather than the "pennie packet" attacks of the allies. The French were fighting the trench war of 1917 (with the Maginot Line) and not the 'lightning' war of 1940. Technology along with new tactics helped the Germans 'blow through defenses.'
The Germans led technology in tank design, long-range rockets (V1 & V2), Jets, and higher calibre guns....but it was a case of too little, too late.

When? When the Goths and Visigoths and other Germanic Tribes blew through the defenses of the Western Roman Empire, and just trashed the place? During the 100 years War? WWI or WW2?

It's not so much of technology but rather the proper use of new technology that helped Germany roll over the defence of continental Europe. Germany wa slucky in having far-sighted thinker & strategist like Heinz Guderian who pushed for independently operable armoured units & combined arms warfare as opposed to the British & French who persisted in using the infantry as the main arm of warfare supported by bits & pieces of armoured units.

Germany invented an entirely new fighting doctrine, backed up by a unique military structure and a few military geniuses.
The doctrine was blitzkrieg. 'Lightning War' used fast moving units to undermine the coherence, logistics and spirit of the enemy rather than striking directly against its armies. It was spearheaded by quick tanks, pioneering glider troops and unique dive bombers. It was helped by facing an antiquated but brave Polish army and French surrender-monkeys as it's main opposition.
The structure was OKH and OKW. One former branch provided regular command. The other was a study branch which provided state-of-the-art military thinking and theory to every situation.
The geniuses included Guderian and Rommel, to which can be added Halder, Manstein, Balck and Himmler. These people were some of the few capable of thinking and leading as fast as the new technology could move.

ähm if you meen the wwII i would say... the german had a lot of new modern weapons and strategies developed.
example is the "blitzkrieg" mobil units roll over the enemy. they used light tanks and "stukkas" for that. the enemy didn't expect the fast running...
