For a pet, choose a girl, they don't smell as much and they don't drag around that unsightly "luggage" behind them.

This is a hard question to answer. Both make wonderful pets. Females are much more active than males and don't smell at all. Males, however, will happily sit in your lap relaxing. It depends on what sort of pet you want. If you want one that is active and is always on the move than get females. If you want a pet that'll just chill out on your lap then get males.
Whichever you get make sure you get two because rats are very social animals and need company! If you want a male rat and a female rat then you may be able to get the male desexed but it will be expensive and its hard to find rodent vets. Only get both (male & female) if you can get the male desexed.
Of course, if you want to, you could get 4 rats, 2 males and 2 females (house them separatly of course). But that'll cost more. :D

It depends. Female live longer and are smaller but are more fragile. Males are larger but need lots of baths because of oily coats. Look them up in rat books.

Whichever you get its best to get two or more as they are very social and we cant be with them 24/7 or do what another rat would do.
It all depends on what would suit you best as to what sex you get. Girls are a lot smaller than boys so need smaller bar spacing on their cage. They are also very active and dont like sitting still to be stroked. They are more territorial than boys, especially over their cage. Boys are lazy slobs(most of mine only move if foods involved!), who once they get to a few months old, dont move much, they are happy to sit on your lap or shoulder and be stroked. They also have a tendency to sleep in their wee. Boys wee is no different to girls wee, they only smell because they sleep in it and dont wash as well as girls.

girl...well doesn't really matter, but male rats have very smelly urine, because of not being neutered. If you don't mind the smell males are good. Both can be trained and all that fun stuff
