Couldn't sleep for three days while reading House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski - although the end is less effective than the setup.
The Eye Killers by A A Carr is a genuinely disturbing vampire novel, insidiously scary rather than obvious freak-out.
What Happened Here: Bush Chronicles by Elliot Weinberger scared the crap out of me, as did George Monbiot's book Heat (on global warming).

i read a book that scared me called 'the ultimate evil' by Maury Terry. Its all the more scary because its true. Its about the Son of sam killings in New york in the late 1970's. David berkowitz, who was convicted of the crimes, began writing to Maury Terry saying that he was part of a satanic cult which carried out the murders, aswell as many others across the U.S.A Terry presents strong eveidence of a cult carrying out murders. He links the cult to charles manson and his family. The book is a bit long but quite scary.

The scariest book I have read is "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James. It's about a governess who comes to believe that the two children she is looking after are possessed by the ghosts of two former servants. Scared me witless but it's an old book and the language is a bit difficult at times.

Yeah, the Ladybird version of The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids. It scared the sh*t out of me as a kid, and still gives me chills even now! But I guess that's not quite what you meant - adult books - not really. Last Horror I read was Stephen King's Cell - more "nightmarish" than outright scary.

So relatively, you're finding for a e book with quite an side yet this is clown unfastened and not too terrifying. I understand the clown situation - I relatively have the comparable situation myself! i might advise Stephen King - do basically no longer study "It" because it has a clown in it and is relatively terrifying. additionally, Dean Koontz is excellent - he has greater than a number of wit and a superb turn of word. He could nicely be frightening and humorous on the comparable time, and in lots of cases has quite romance thrown in too. otherwise, Kathy Reichs writes spectacular crime thrillers according to her very own studies as a forensic anthropologist. incredibly intelligent and extremely sturdy.

As a child, I remember being read the story 'the shadow cage' by Philippa Pearce.
That story really affected me - to the point of giving me nightmares and sleeping with my light on etc...
As an adult though, I have not read anything that scary.
