the earlier machines where called Mainframs, Mini, etc... then suddenly it started as desktops, laptops and palm tops.... why are they called like this...why can't they call it by any other name....

Its a sales Technique . They want to potrait their computer is so small that it can sit on one's lap and hence it is called as laptop. Previously we can see that they called the computers as desktop meaning that they can sit easily on the table unlike the olden days computers which occupied one whole room . Later they came out with note book computer meaning that the computers and as small as the size of a note book. This is all a sales zargon and to a certain extent meaningful and hence we should give credit for their names.

Techinically speaking it does not have a reason........there r 3 thing...Desktop / Laptop / and Pamltop.
Desktop - the computer that is kept on top of the table or desk is known as desktop. This denotes it needs a place to keep.
Laptop - the computer that can be used over your laps is laptop. This denotes that it can be carried along.
Palmtop - the computer that works on your hand or palm is a pamltop. it denote it is small and convinent to use and too small to fit in ur hands

Mainframes etc are much larger systems that would never be used at home..

I think it's very simple
Previously all computers are very huge like picture screens and frames so they are called like that and now with new technology coming up we have more sophisticated machines small sizes great magics. your Pc is called Desktop- coz u put it on ur desk
Laptop- u can also put it on ur lap, Palmtop- work on ur palms

basically the laptop computers are portable and can be used just by placing at the top of your lap .So that is the reason why a laptop is called a laptop.

oh thats simple. because the computer is portable . people wanted to bring their computer with them whereever they went. they didnt have table sso they placed it on their laps. soon after it became known as a lap top ! :D

you could call it tabletop, kneetop, handtop i suppose, when you get to name something, just keep in mind that someone will always be second guessing your reason for naming it what you did.

may be because one can work on it by keeping on ones lap (on it means top) hence lap top.
