When I grew up it was considered acceotable for both teachers and parents to smack. I believe that any type of violence used to discipline, teaches the kids that violence is ok. (This includes verbal abuse)
Smacking should not be allowed.

I believe in the odd smack occasionally and when needed. Sometimes children do not react to anything else. When I say the odd smack I mean the odd smack, not belting, not thrashing, not beating, just a odd smack maybe of the back of the legs or bottom. Then of course, when the tantrum or drama has died down a good little chit chat explaining why you had to revert to this.
I do not think that teachers have the right to smack children without the parents consent.

No I don't, if you smack an adult you get arrested for GBH, if you smack a child you don't, why is it OK to smack a child but not an adult, my father thought nothing of giving us a good smack at every chance he got, he was a psychopath who got a kick out of smacking his kids, I vowed at an early age that I would never hit any child no matter what they had done, there is no need for violence at all, you can teach a child respect and understanding without using your hand to smack them, I have never hit a child in my life and never found it necessary to either, sitting them down and explaining whats what is much easier than violence.

I think that as a general rule you should avoid smacking, BUT, I don't disregard it as a discipline method altogether.Trust me on this I'm no tree-hugger, but I would not advocate teachers smacking children as I have very little faith in their ability to be objective while looking after 30 kids in a confined space(that's not as insulting as it looks, i'd doubt my ability to be objective too!).
The lunatics are running the asylum in this country I'm afraid and I strongly suspect that with the law being pushed further in favour of the childrens right to 'do what the hell they like with no consequences', we shall see things getting worse on the streets of Britain long before they get better. Maybe if we stopped trying to do away with the old and integrated the new alongside instead we'd have had fewer adult fatalities at the hands of children this year.

There are times when smacking a child is a necessary evil. It's a short, sharp shock that stops bad behaviour most times.
Teachers should never be allowed to smack. My teachers smacked me and my friends as children and they abused that privilege and abused us daily.

I certainly don't believe that teachers should be allowed smack other peoples children, nor am i an advocate of parents smacking their own children, it just causes children to be resentful, it lowers their self esteem, it doesnt teach them anything about right and wrong or about the real consequences of their actions. A better approach would be to empower a child to recognise that they acted inappropriately and possitively reinforce good behaviour.

I think a smack on the bottom is very occasionally required and acceptable.
Teachers should NEVER be allowed to smack.

In venezuela recently, I saw people smacking other people's children. It is seen to teach them respect when they're running around treading on your feet and stealing your money, and I tend to agree! Ever since our nanny state came into full force we've seen the state of society drop ever lower, and respect is all but lost. I know things were bad before, and there's always been those who shun authority, but it is certainly getting worse.
Its been in the news lately that adults are becoming scared of groups of children, and I believe it. A good clip round then ear, or a smack with the wooden spoon, soon sorted me out, and taught me my place in the pecking order.
Teachers though... well thats a minefield! In this culture of suing someone because you tripped on a loose carpet whilst robbing their home, I don't see that ever happening.
Oh God, I sound like my grandad!

Define smacking. Are we talking about parents spanking their children? I'm a firm believer in spanking. You can't sternly tell a three year old that they're being disrespectful, and make them sit in a corner. They don't understand that. You have to reinforce your discipline with something that they can understand. As for teachers...that might be a little out of line. When I was in school, our principal had the authority to issue "swats." But, each parent had to sign a permission slip for that to happen.
