My son is in the 5th grade. At the beginning of the year his teacher noticed that he's struggling and we're pursuing some testing for some resource help. In the meantime, I've been getting notices quite often that he has zeros in the grade book. I assume that he's not done his work and jump on him about it only to find it at home...graded.

This has happed probably 6-8 times already since September. I talked with the teacher on the phone and then with the principal and now it's happened again with 2 different subjects. One is math, his most challenging subject, and he got 100% on the assignment and a zero in the grade book. I'm at my wit's end. I don't know where to turn next.

The school social worker keeps mentioning his self esteem being low and I'm certain that this situation isn't helping any.

Any suggestions?

if the school is not willing to help you on this problem then go higher up take all your reports to the school board or board of trustees and be tough with them. keep going higher up and screaming louder that your son is falling between the cracks. sometimes teachers choose to single 1 child out for their own stupid reasons. as far as the self esteem just keep telling him that you love him and you know that he is doing the best he can and you are on his side. Talk to other parents who may have had this same teacher in the past and see if they have had a simular problem. hope this helps and good luck

You should write a letter to the principal and the school board addressing the problems you are and your son are having with the situation.

You show the teacher the graded paper, the 0 in the grade book, and demand an explanation.

Hire a lawyer, this is illegal in most states.Do you go over his home work to see that he has done it? You could pull him out of that school and send him to another or home school him. Good Luck.

Keep looking through his things and delivering the graded papers back to the school with a note that says, "please ensure that these marks are recorded in your gradebook."

Then YOU keep your own gradebook and track the grades you see and praise your son for work well done.

written complaint to the principal, copy to the school board. If no satisfaction, to your own district school board rep, the one you elect.
