Solar Quest was a big fav of mine when I was younger (space monopoly, with gas as an added feature, very nice).
Axis and Allies was great too (and Third Reich if you had days to dedicate to it).

no doubt SNAKES AND LADDERS
1. it's probably the cheapest.
2. it will take 10 to 20 seconds to know the rules
3. not much things are needed for the game that makes it handy to bring unlike monopoly or life
4. pretty exciting for a simple game
5. people can actually be entertained by watching others play
this proves that snakes and ladders is the dominating game board of the world of game boards

I would say that Ticket to Ride is probably the best game for people who are new to boardgames. Easy to learn, attractive pieces and board, and just plain fun.
Puerto Rico is the longstanding best-rated game on Boardgamegeek.com. Lots of decisions to make, multiple winning strategies.

a toss-up between Scrabble and Stratego. both take some skill compared with those involving luck of the dice or a spinner. Trivia pursuit could rank there as well despite luck of the roll.

I used to love 'The game of life'. The Simpsons Monopoly is good too

I love Taboo, but i dont think that is really a board game, so i would deff have to say Life...a lot of fun memeories with that one.
