Ok, my dad has an HP Pavillion windows 98 computer. He suddenly lost his browser and his homepage...what would cause this and how does he correct it? He did a Norton anti-virus scan and nothing came up, so kind of clueless on what to do to correct it. I appreciate your help...thank you....

What do you mean your browser disappeared? Your IE shortcut just disappeared or did your entire browser program get deleted? In order to check, you need to go to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer and see if you can locate your Internet Explorer program because I do not think it is possible for your program to just get deleted. Click on IEXPLORE.exe and make sure your browser starts up correctly. You just need to create a shortcut for that IEXPLORE.exe and put it back on your desktop.

It was a browser hijacker most likely. Download Adaware and Spybot. Both programs are free and easy to use. Then once you've ran scans with both programs, In your browser at the top click tools, internet options and you will see a line at the top in the Homepage section. Just put his preferred homepage back in.

You shouldn't mention fdisking, someone might actually do it.

sounds like a spyware problem that hijacked your browser. You can try a spyware scan online at www.ewido.net. If you have no browser, you are going to have to have someone download the progam at that website and you can install it from a CD. The biggest issue is you are running windows 98, which is very old. Most software companies are not making new stuff for it. So I am not 100% sure its going to work, but its worth a shot.

right hit on explorer icon go to properties type in the home page it was set at in the address bar hit on apply & ok . if the explorer i con not on desktop open my computer icon open hard drive( C) open program files . open internet explorer folder in there ur see the blue
explorer icon right hit on that hit on copy then right hit on desktop hit on paste .then get spyware off pc

lets get that out of ur pc ur some antivirus will miss key keylogger and trojans . frist of all you need to download avg antispyware this is verry good in getting all kinda bad files . then you need to download Adaware
a-squared< is verry good in picking up traking software files that is on the pc and it will find them . then download antispyware blocker that will find any type of virus . trojans files with antispyware blocker when you run that at the top of the box ur see
C:\ WINDOWS
remove the word windows and just leave in

C:\

then hit scan it will search all of the pc every file for virus or trojans and this will not have any problem with ur antivirus you have i have this my self .

then download spyware doctor that will search the pc for even more spyware adaware . just having 1 or 2 antispyware dont cut any ice at all you neeed what i said to download . when you have them run ur pc in safemode and scan the pc with then 1 at a time . this way from safemode the trojan and keylogger cant hide them self coz there is not internet access on in safe mode all the software i said to download will get the trojans and keylogger

if they say some are in the registry you watch what path there in and get in the registry and right hit on that folder and hit remove dont worry when the pc restart up win xp will creat a new clean folder for you
