Reading the answers you have so far, you seem to have two answers, but do you really, honestly realise just how many films he has done?

Duel
The Sugarland Express
Jaws
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
1941
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Poltergeist
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
Twilight Zone The Movie
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Amazing Stories
Ghost Train
The Mission
The Color Purple
Empire of the Sun
Always
Hook
Jurassic Park
Schindler's List
The Lost World
Amistad
Saving Private Ryan
American Journey
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Minority Report
Catch Me If You Can
The Terminal
War of the Worlds
Munich

With more in production as we speak (or write as the case may be) And what about all those fab novels he has writtern? Which can often have more suspense than the films. But my personal answer would be Poltergiest, an old creepy, eiry film that most people would say scared them very easily!

How can you choose between E.T., Jaws, Schindlers List, The Colour Purple, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report?
For me it's Schindler's List.
Here was a 'mainstream', enormously successful director, famed for 'popcorn' entertainment, suddenly throwing the attrocities of the Nazis to his audience.
And brilliantly.
There is uncompromising horror, all the more frightening because we know what happened and Spielberg doesn't shy away from showing us heads being blown apart, the scenes at Auschwitz, children in peril.
It's one of the best movies ever made, and surely gave him the confidence to go on and make films such as Saving Private Ryan, and Munich.
It's film-making at it's very best.

My favorite of Steven Spielberg is the Color Purple, he portrayed that time very well and I felt great empathy for the characters.

With lots to pick from, I'd go with Schindler's List. Why? Well with the shear amount of time Spielberg spent on researching this project(He interviewed a lot of the survivors of the Nazi Concentration Camps). A well-made, well-acted film. It brought to light how one man can change his views. Schindler then decided to help as many as he could! I believe it was over a thousand Jews he saved from certain death.

Well Tulip, my favourite has to be Jaws. I think Spielberg was at his best before he started to take himself too seriously, and whilst later films like Schindlers List are fabulous epics and amazing feats of film making, I love Jaws bacause it is great, unabashed good fun! The last hour when the three guys are all on the boat is about as much fun as you can have in front of the TV.

Got to be Jaws followed by Schindler's List. Who can forget Raiders of the Lost Ark? I like Duel and Saving Private Ryan too. I can't watch ET anymore, too sad.

Schindler's List- it is heartbreaking, especially when you remember all this actually happened to real people, and the acting is so fantastic. So is the visual style- all black and white, with just the girl in the red dress and colour at the beginning and end. Amazing.

Jaws is his best work by far. War of the Worlds was well made too. Saving Private Ryan (or America wins the 2nd world war..,again!) entertaining at best.
