your life is composed of events from the day you are born until the day you pass away. your body is certainly composed of electrical factions, which outlive the body. i believe that the 'afterlife' is a culmination of a lifetimes memories; and it is almost as if you relive these events over and over for eternity.
therefore the purpose in life is to make the most of the time you have, and attempt to create as many positive memories as possible, whilst avoiding the negative.
whether you disagree with the first bit or not-it is difficult to oppose the latter.

Definitely 42. I quote -
Lunkwill: Do you...
Deep Thought: Have an answer for you? Yes. But you're not going to like it.
Fook: Please tell us. We must know!
Deep Thought: Okay. The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything is...
[wild cheers from audience, then silence]
Deep Thought: 42.
Deep Thought is a computer. From The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

42??? My god woman you are merely a young whippersnapper!
Trust me - its 6O thats the real ***** - enjoy - make a list of all the things you would like to do in your life, then tick them off as you go. I still have sky diving and Hot air balloon lined up for this year! Enjoy every day as it were your last, because you never know when it is. The meaning of live is that you are a long time dead. We are ABOVE ground and still warm! Go for it girl!!! lol

Read this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Answer_to_Life,_the_Universe,_and_Everything
and you will see why the answer to the question "what is the meaning of life?" is indeed 42.
I've never heard a better explanation anyway.
Douglas Adams wrote The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. If you never do anything else read it. It will add meaning to a fruitless existence.

It all depends on if you beleive in a god or not.
If you do beleive, then most religious people would say something along the lines of being good and going to heaven.
If you don't beleive, then you have to find your own meaning. There will never be a "true" meaning, but nonethless you can find your own purpose. I guess you could also say survival and reproducing are some of the purposes of life, because they keep they life cycle going.
