I am an American and I honestly think it's because it is cheaper that way. I just went to Europe (specifically Spain) for the first time this September and yeah, I noticed that all of the bathrooms there are like an actual tiny room with a full-length door. But here in America, it's not like that, I guess except for some expensive restaurants. The restroom stalls here require less materials and it's easier to construct. Although it is less personal, it is safer than you think. I've actually learned not to "stare" into the gaps between the restroom stalls. I just do a quick glance to see if there is anyone inside. If I see something dark or something moving, that means it's occupied. This way, rapes are less likely to happen too.

You know what happens in restrooms. That way, people can see if anything bad's happening. I went in a loo on the beach front on Shelter Island, San Diego, and the cubicles didn't even have doors! Not surprising that I was the only one in there!

You know, now that you've pointed that out, I realize it is sooo true everywhere. Schools are very bad about that, no privacy. My kids won't even use the restroom at their public schools. I hate it when little kids crawl under the stalls, there is plenty of room for them to do that. But yeah, those cracks are SO wide.

Cost. you see those things cost a lot of money, and people abuse them so they have to be repaired and replaced often. So they are built inexpensively and to provide just enough 'privacy'.

They have to make sure that nobody's having sex in the stalls. Or shooting drugs. Or doing any of a hundred other illegal things.

Cost. The parts aren't anywhere close to each other, so the wear and tear is less.

It is not just america, it is all over. Caribbean too. Blame the manufacturers, not the country itself.
