For example, the scratches on your back you might have after sex. You see them in the morning and you smile to yourself, even though they hurt.
Or when you go skateboarding with your friends and have a great time, even with a few scratches and grazes etc.

It's not so much that pain makes a good memory "better" as it is that pain makes a good memory, or a bad memory, more "vivid". The more vivid the memory, the more meaning.

It's the marks it leaves behind

whether they be physical, mental, temporary, or permanent.
